An interesting and eclectic museum in the Columbia River gorge area, originally built as a private mansion. The collection of native American Indian is in my opinion the finest collection there. Most unusual is the miniature fashion display that was from the years after World War 2 as a way to showcase the work of French fashion designers when cloth and materials were in short supply.
I noted the extremely fine filigree workmanship of some of the silver pieces that were donated by the Romanian queen who was befriended by the builder of the mansion. Also I appreciated the varied designs in the chess sets collection.

I visited the morning of Wednesday, August 7th...
Totally enjoyed my visit! Both touring the Museum and walking the grounds with Yoshi (Husky rescue).
Because of Yoshi. I arrived when the museum opened, too take of advantage of lower summer temperatures. When I mentioned this to one of the staff members, at the front desk, as I paid my entry (only $16) They offered to let me park in a employee parking lot in the shade. This rates as a BIG THANK YOU!!

I would allow at least 4 hours (a morning or afternoon) to tour the Museum.

It's very well laid out and I found myself reading every information card accompanying each piece of art or historical item...

On my next visit. I'll be sure to bring a friend. So we can take advantage of the large chess set available for play in the new addition / lower gallery!

I purposely didn't post any photos of the artwork inside the museum. As I highly recommend you make the trip for yourself (with friend or family), to this gem of the gorge...

Great small museum in an out of the way place. Maryville has a great collection of art, across multiple mediums, including sculptures by Rodin, who spent a lot of time here early in the last century when it was still a home. Just the history of the house and the people that lived there is interesting. And the views! Beautiful views from everywhere, not to mention just the drive down the Columbia Gorge. An easy two hour drive from Portland - it is worth the trip.

Definitely a hidden treasure specially the Rodin room and the views over the Columbia river. The nearby Stonehenge replica is also great location for interesting pictures. Definitely worth visiting a few times since one visit will not do justice; also a great place to take visitors too.

I wanted to visit this museum
for years to view their large
Native American collection
and other interesting exhibits.

You will find a nice exhibit from
Marie, Queen of Romania with
many personal items and a
replica of her coronation
crown.

The August Rodin Gallery has
a large selection of his works
including watercolor sketches
and bronzes.

The Native American collection
has baskets, wood carvings, and other items from Alaska, the Columbia River Plateau, the
Hopi, and many other tribes.

The museum has a number
of other permanent exhibits
including Sam Hill, the founder
of the museum, and on Loie
Fuller, who told Hill that he should build an art museum
in his new mansion.

A replica of Stonehenge is
a few miles away and is a
War Memorial to the fallen
soldiers of WW 1 from the
local area.

Located near Goldendale on
Washington Highway 14E in
the Columbia Gorge.

One of the great regional
museums with exhibits from
around the world, including
a great Native American
collection, a very interesting
exhibit from Romania, the
Rodin Gallery, and French
small-scale high fashion manquins.

I went up here last week with my family. It turned out to be a very nice experience. It was off season, so we mostly had the place to ourselves. The sculpture garden was neat and the views off the cliff of the Columbia River and snow-covered Mt. Hood were great. The museum itself was neat. I particularly enjoyed the Rodin and Native American exhibits along with the Art Nouveau and Eastern Orthodox exhibits. We made it over to the mini Stonehenge, which was nice. It is worth a walk down to Sam Hill's grave from there also. I also recommend staying in a good Inn in The Dalles and not locally. It is worth the little drive from there. Plus, you can check out The Dalles old town if you have the time.

It's been a while since my last visit to the museum. I love the grounds and the building architecture as much as the contents inside. There is so much to experience and see inside with beautiful art, cultural treasures, and history. Writing about everything would occupy a significant amount of time. Suffice it to say that the best way to do Maryhill is simply to visit and experience it for yourself. It is a treasure in so many ways.
